The singularities of the Santiago del Estero (Argentina) labor market in the face of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic

Abstract

Faced with the challenges of the economic shock caused by the SARS-CoV-2 Coronavirus pandemic, it is necessary to have organized information on the state of the economies, in such a way that it makes it possible to know the starting point in detail and therefore have the ability to design policies that contemplate the singularities of each case. The objective of this work is to analyze the Santiago del Estero labor market prior to the impact of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic. To achieve this a quantitative study with a descriptive-correlational scope is carried out through the comparative method of subnational units, using a series of secondary data sources. The SARS-CoV-2 pandemic finds in Santiago del Estero a job market with the following structural problems: job discouragement, invisible underemployment, high levels of informality, low wages in the registered private sector, high levels of over-employment, and deep inequalities in the incidence of unemployment by age, and especially by sex. When designing policies for a market upon which livelihoods and the material well-being of most of the population depends, these important issues must be considered.
